Khopra Danda Trek

13 Days

The Khopra Danda Trek also referred to as the Khayar Lake Trek or Khopra Ridge Trek, could be a less trodden path within the Annapurna Region, and recently opened to trekkers. This route is right for those seeking shorter, quieter alternatives to the area’s classic treks, combining stunning mountain panoramas, cultural insights, and tranquil environments.
The journey begins with a drive from Pokhara to the scenic Gurung village of Ghandruk, where we break for lunch before hiking to Tadapani for breathtaking views of Mt. Fishtail (Machhapuchhre), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. The trek proceeds to Dobato, passing through lush jungles, and continues through dense rhododendron forests to Bayeli Kharka, vibrant with floral colors in spring.
Ascending above the treeline, the trail offers magnificent views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. A detour to Khayar Lake at 3600 meters presents enchanting reflections of the Himalayas in its sacred waters. The trek then results in Ghorepani Poon Hill via Swanta village, culminating in stunning sunrise views over the Himalayan giants from Poon Hill. The return journey winds through extensive rhododendron, pine, and oak forests towards Nayapul, followed by a repulse to Pokhara. This trek encapsulates the serenity and sweetness of the Annapurna’s less explored landscapes.

Our first day kicks off with a two-and-a-half-hour road trip toward the Annapurna Massif, where the spectacular views complete the bumpy, potholed road. The drive passes through the attractive Gurung village of Ghandruk. From there, we start our ascent to Tadapani through the lush jungle. Tadapani is a wonderful viewpoint, offering stunning vistas of the Annapurnas and Machhapuchhre, especially at sunrise.

After breakfast, we continue our ascent via stone-paved stairs, leading through an enormous, beautiful forest adorned with waterfalls. Trekking during the spring season offers the added great thing about blooming, colorful rhododendron forests. Our destination, Ghorepani, is found in an open area, providing magnificent vistas of towering peaks, including the 8000-meter-plus giants, Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I.

The 45-minute hike leads us to the Muldai Viewpoint at 3637 meters, where we are greeted by a panoramic sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After enjoying the wonderful sunrise from the ridge, the day continues with another highlight—a visit to the stunning Khayar Lake, set high amidst an impressive amphitheater of snow-clad peaks. Sacred to Hindus, Khayar Lake became a serious pilgrimage site during Janai Purnima in August, celebrating kinship, especially between siblings. A visit at any time is remarkable, but during Janai Purnima, it’s truly enthralling.

From the heights of Khopra Danda, the trail rapidly descends to Swanta via Dhankharka, offering a peaceful retreat in one of the quieter villages along the trekking route. This segment of the trek offers a combination of dynamic landscapes and physical challenges, culminating in reaching a well-known stop that has striking views of the encircling mountains.

The trek's dramatic climax arrives at dawn. Rising early, we commence a brief one-hour hike to Poon Hill (3210 m./10531 ft.), where we witness a powerful panorama unfold. Because the dense green jungle gives thanks to Himalayan foothills, the 000 spectacle begins with the towering peaks of Singa Chuli, Dhaulagiri, Fishtail, and therefore the Annapurna massif glowing within the sunrise. This world-famous view provides a panoramic start to the day. After soaking in the scenery, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast, then head to Pokhara via Nayapul, catching a cab to conclude our memorable journey.
